What is "Immersion Learning"?

イマージョンはどういう意味ですか?

There seems to be this pervasive belief among adult learners that, in order to learn a language, one has to memorize grammar tables and vocabulary in a school-like setting. A belief that, even after years of practice, an adult learner will never reach proficiency; That novels geared toward adults will never be intelligible. We believe that these notions are myths. We believe that these ideas come from the application of ineffective methods. There is a great deal of research showing that adult learners can reach incredibly high levels of proficiency. That the number one predictor of success and competency is time spent with the language. Specifically, time spent with comprehensible input.

Immersion learning really just boils down to getting input in your target language and increasing comprehension over time. The comprehension you achieve is a direct result of engaging with the language at a high level, and not the other way around.

Comprehensible Input

To make a long story short, language learning is most effective when you are recieving input just outside of your comfort zone. For practical purposes, we will say this is between 5 to 10% unknown language. Your sole job as a language learner is to get as much input as possible while seeking out this unknown portion. This website exists as a resource for learners attempting to accomplish this. Our goal is to make obtaining this input as easy as possible. We provide resources such as vocabulary flash cards and target language subtitles so you can focus on getting input.

When Do I Speak?

The biggest difference you might notice with our method is that we prioritize comprehension over speaking and writing. The Input Hypothesis suggests ー and we tend to agree ー that output is a function of input. If you can learn to comprehend your target language first it makes the process of learning to output far more efficient. If you understand the language you will notice you have some level of natural speaking ability.
